Mountain States Legal Foundation is a long-standing and growing litigation 501c3 non-profit whose mission is to protect and restore the rights enshrined in the constitution of the United States. We focus on natural resources issues particular to the American West, the 1st Amendment, and the right to bear arms. All of our clients are represented pro bono



Reporting to the COO, The Director of Development at MSLF is responsible for building and executing the strategic plan of the development team. In partnership with the President, the Director of Development will forge relationships to build MSLF’s visibility, impact, and financial resources. MSLF is seeking a highly motivated individual who can arrive at the Foundation and immediately begin building the team and expanding the field of potential support. MSLF is looking to take the next step from a solid $3 million organization to a $10 million player in non-profit litigation.

    • Responsible for the management and execution of the day-to-day operations of the development department, which currently consists of a Major Gifts Officer, a Development Assistant, and two Development Contractors.
    • Report at Board of Director meetings on fundraising progress and outlook.



    • 50% time engaging with and cultivating donors across the country with a goal of growing MSLF’s contributions to a point where, at minimum, budgeted expenditures are 100% covered by yearly contribution revenue.
    • Work directly with the President to maximize the team’s fundraising time and devise an efficient plan for the major gift engagement of the team.


    • Develop and execute MSLF’s annual fundraising plan.
    • In coordination with the Communications Team, develop the annual mailing calendar.
    • Implement a Foundation Grant submission process and ensure deadlines are met.
    • Supervise annual proposal submissions.
    • Oversee the maintenance and improvement of the Virtuous database and oversee staff responsible for data entry and gift processing. Track pledges.
    • Management of MSLF special events.
    • Expand MSLF’s legacy giving program.



    • Create, implement, and monitor the annual Development budget in conjunction with the Chief Operating Officer.
    • Approve vendor invoices as it pertains to Development activity.
    • Oversee that donations are processed correctly and in compliance with IRS regulations.



  • 5+ years’ senior level experience in nonprofit fundraising, with strong team management skills (with major gifts focus)
  • A passion for the (conservative / libertarian) Liberty movement (pro US constitution, pro freedom of speech, pro right to bear arms, etc.)
  • Ability and drive to take the org to the next level of growth!
  • Able to travel across the US for 50% of the time to meet with donors
  • Innovative and creative: a visionary with strong organizational management skills  
  • Able to manage the team and role remotely
